Emma Harrison

Emma Harrison – Emotional AbstractionistEmma Harrison was born in southern England in 1973. Harrison’s 25 year career began as an Emotional Abstractionist, impacted by her observations in Kunstwerken verzameld door Theo en Vincent in Amsterdam. Shedepended upon the rhythms of the subconscious, changing daily and capriciously. She came to it in a childlike and primitive way, initially suspicious of the strictures ofacademia, and taking her learning from modern masters. Unlikely sources such as the Hirst Spot Paintings in Tate Modern in London, and their ‘appeal of endlessness’, and Willem de Kooning, Miró, Rothko, Saville andHelma Klutz all led Harrison on a trajectory through layering and chaos. In the mid 2020s she studied directly under Edward Povey, whose Emotional Realist paintings hang with Fischl, Lichtenstein, Chagall and Picasso. This caused a gradual shift in Harrison’s paintings towards increasing retlection, and an intentional approach, spending time with the 1895-1910 European Colourists as her new influences
Curator’s Note
Emma Harrison’s practice has evolved from subconscious-driven abstraction and layered chaos toward increasingly deliberate compositions informed by European Colourists and sustained reflection.
