Artist BioLatana is a multidisciplinary artist based in Singapore whose practice has evolved through living between Eastern and Western cultures. A self-taught artist, she began her creative journey through photography, publishing three photographic books before expanding into sculpture, mixed media, digital art, and painting. Her work explores memory, identity, transformation, and the traces that time leaves behind. Her current series, Beauty, Amid Rupture, brings these interests together through layered surfaces, mineral pigments, and gold leaf, creating paintings in which light gradually emerges from within darkness and material.Latana has exhibited internationally in museums and galleries across Asia, Europe, and the United States. Her work is held in public and private collections, including the Sabah State Museum in Borneo.Artist StatementMy work begins with a question:How can light emerge from within darkness, memory, and material?Rather than depicting a specific place, I create spaces that exist between the physical and the emotional. Through layered surfaces, I explore memory, transformation, and the quiet emergence of light from within. My current body of work, Beauty, Amid Rupture, proposes that beauty is not found despite brokenness but can emerge because of it. A fissure becomes more than a rupture; it becomes a threshold through which light, hope, and renewal enter.I work intuitively, allowing each painting to evolve through successive layers that conceal, reveal, and transform what came before. The history of the work remains embedded beneath the surface, becoming part of its meaning.Ultimately, I hope my work invites viewers to pause, look more deeply, and discover beauty where they least expect it.
